One of the most valuable lessons I've learned in my years of practicing meditation is the peace that lies in neutrality. Many Buddhist schools of meditation teach the dangers of always celebrating the positive or shunning the negative and instead encourage resting in neutral feelings.
In a world that often seems to have strong feelings about everyone's physical appearance, body neutrality offers a refreshing and liberating perspective. Unlike body positivity, which emphasizes loving your body, body neutrality focuses on accepting your body as it is. This mindset can be a more fruitful relationship in the long run with our bodies as it removes the expectation to always have strong positive feelings about our bodies, which is often unrealistic given that living in a body can be painful, frustrating, and even disappointing at times.
Reduce Pressure and Stress
One of the most significant benefits of body neutrality is the reduction of pressure to constantly feel positive about your body. In the age of social media, where idealized images of beauty are omnipresent, striving to love every part of oneself can be overwhelming. Body neutrality allows individuals to shift their focus away from physical appearance and instead appreciate their bodies for what they can do, not just how they look. This shift can alleviate stress and create a more relaxed and accepting mindset. It also allows us to focus on the many miraculous acts that the body does naturally such as breathing, moving, and experiencing which are not genetically dependent and whose value does not rely on others' opinions.
Encourage Healthy Habits
Body neutrality promotes a healthier relationship with food and exercise. Instead of engaging in diet and fitness routines solely to alter one’s appearance, body neutrality encourages individuals to make choices that enhance overall well-being. This can lead to more sustainable and enjoyable habits, as the motivation comes from a desire to feel good and be healthy rather than a need to conform to societal beauty standards. This mindset also ages well. As we age, beauty standards become harder and harder to achieve as beauty standards are often traits of the young. Focusing on health, however, can be adaptive and can age along with our bodies!
Enhance Mental Health
The pressure to conform to unrealistic beauty standards can take a toll on mental health, leading to issues such as low self-esteem, anxiety, and depression. Embracing body neutrality helps to mitigate these issues by shifting the focus from appearance to function and capability. By accepting one’s body without judgment, individuals can foster a more positive and balanced mental state, reducing the negative impact of societal pressures. Body neutrality allows us to decide, "It's not my job to be beautiful" and to instead decide what it is our job to be. What do our body's unique talents and traits enable us to be good at? What do our body's unique challenges limit us from doing? Answering these questions with a clear mind and non-judgment allows us to see our bodies for what they are and what they can do. This can be both humbling and empowering.
Promote Inclusivity
Body neutrality is inherently inclusive, recognizing that everyone’s body is different and that there is no one “correct” way to look. This mindset helps to combat the pervasive stereotypes and biases related to body size, shape, and appearance. Even in body positivity campaigns and approaches, there is often an "othering" that arises in the discourse. By promoting acceptance of all bodies, body neutrality can contribute to a more inclusive and compassionate society, where individuals are valued for who they are rather than how they look.
Foster Genuine Self-Acceptance
Perhaps the most profound benefit of body neutrality is the pathway it creates toward genuine self-acceptance. By removing the pressure to love every aspect of one’s body, individuals can focus on accepting themselves as they are. This acceptance can lead to a deeper sense of peace and contentment, as individuals learn to appreciate their bodies for their unique qualities, challenges, and capabilities. It also allows individuals to practice holding the "both-and" which is a key component to acceptance of self and the larger world.
Practical Steps to Embrace Body Neutrality
1. **Shift Your Focus**: Concentrate on what your body can do rather than how it looks. Appreciate its strength, resilience, and functionality.
2. **Limit Exposure to Outside Influences**: Reduce time spent on social media platforms or consuming content that promotes unrealistic beauty standards.
3. **Practice Mindfulness**: Engage in mindfulness practices such as meditation or journaling to develop a more present and accepting attitude toward your body.
4. **Surround Yourself with Neutrality**: Engage with communities and individuals who promote body acceptance and support your journey toward body neutrality.
5. **Be Kind to Yourself**: Acknowledge that body neutrality is a journey, and it’s okay to have moments of struggle. Practice self-compassion and patience along the way.
Body neutrality offers a powerful and liberating alternative to the often overwhelming pressures of body positivity. By focusing on acceptance and appreciation rather than unconditional love, body neutrality helps to foster a healthier, more balanced relationship with one’s body. Embracing this mindset can lead to reduced stress, improved mental health, and a more inclusive society. Ultimately, body neutrality paves the way for genuine self-acceptance, allowing individuals to live more fulfilling and contented lives centered in their true purpose (which usually has nothing to do with being attractive).
