Functional Breathing

The average person takes around 20,000 breaths a day. The way we breath affects just about every system in our bodies but many people breathe in a way that causes systemic inflammation and imbalance within the body. In this workshop we’ll begin to dive into the basics of functional breathing so you can learn to breath in the healthiest way possible for your body! We’ll cover the basic anatomy of the breath, common forms of dysfunctional breathing and how to begin to breathe more functionally.

Breathing Muscles 

Primary: Diaphragm, Internal intercostals, Intercostalis intimi, Subcostals

Secondary/Accessory:  sternocleidomastoid, the scalenus anterior, medius, and posterior, the pectoralis major and minor, the inferior fibres of serratus anterior and latissimus dorsi, abdominal muscles 

3 Most Common Types of Dysfunctional Breathing

1 / Paradoxical Breathing

Belly button towards the spine during inhalation and away during exhalation. 

2 / Chest Breathing

Using secondary breathing muscles to power the breath.

3 / Mouth Breathing

Using the mouth rather than the nose to breathe in a resting state.

Functional Breathing- breathing that is appropriate for the needs of the body in the moment, using primary breathing muscles and optimizing the function of the breath
